- The Balancing Act: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a Person of Color
In honor of Juneteenth, I'm going to use this next blog post to address a common issue that many black and brown people face: Imposter Syndrome. We're not going to dwell on the negative today though. This article (hopefully) will empower you to overcome imposter syndrome and free yourself from the imprisoning psychological phenomenon forcing you to believe that you don't belong. Because you do. Imposter Syndrome is a pervasive issue that affects individuals across various backgrounds and walks of life. However, young adults of color often face unique challenges when it comes to embracing their true selves in different settings. In this blog post, we will explore the struggles associated with imposter syndrome, discuss effective strategies to overcome it, and empower individuals of color to embrace their identity authentically, irrespective of the environment they find themselves in. However, in order to embrace your identity in spaces where it may be difficult, we must all first acknowledge that these barriers exist. Just because you haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean it’s not happening. When you experience the exhausting phenomenon that is imposter syndrome it becomes increasingly difficult to balance your day to day tasks and your mental health. Therefore, the solutions that you can apply to stop feeling this way include internal maintenance and external adjustments. Keep reading to gain more understanding and solutions for you to apply someone navigating higher education and the workforce. Understanding Imposter Syndrome: Imposter Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon where individuals doubt their accomplishments and fear being exposed as frauds, despite evidence of their competence. For young people of color, societal pressures and systemic barriers can exacerbate these feelings of inadequacy, as they may face racial stereotypes, discrimination, and a lack of representation in certain spaces, especially in college or the workplace. The Struggles of Imposter Syndrome for People of Color: Stereotype Threat: People of color may constantly feel the weight of disproving negative stereotypes associated with their racial or ethnic background. This added pressure can lead to self-doubt and undermine their confidence. Lack of Representation: In spaces where individuals of color are underrepresented, they may question whether they truly belong or if they were simply included to fulfill diversity quotas. Sooner or later it will become abundantly clear which is true. This can make it challenging to express their authentic selves and contribute fully in professional spaces. Internalized Racism: Society's pervasive racial biases can lead to internalized racism, causing individuals of color to subconsciously adopt those same beliefs that society has, thus causing individuals to question their worth and capabilities. This self-doubt can hinder their ability to embrace their authentic identity. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Acknowledge and Normalize: Recognize that imposter syndrome is a common experience and that many individuals, including high achievers, face it. Normalizing these feelings can alleviate some of the associated shame and self-blame. Challenge Negative Thoughts: Actively question and challenge negative thoughts and self-doubt. I cannot emphasize this one enough. Replace self-critical statements with positive affirmations and remind yourself of your accomplishments and capabilities. The things you say to yourself and think about yourself definitely have an effect on how you feel about yourself. If you allow yourself to believe that you don’t belong, then you will never feel that you do. Seek Support: Connect with a network of individuals who share similar experiences and can provide support and encouragement. Communities, online forums, or mentorship programs for people of color can be invaluable in navigating imposter syndrome. You're not alone and there is always someone to lean on. Celebrate Achievements: Give yourself credit for your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Keep a record of your achievements and refer to them during moments of self-doubt as a reminder of your capabilities. Embracing Your Authentic Self: Cultivate Self-Awareness: Take time to understand and embrace your unique identity, values, and strengths. Recognize that your experiences and perspectives as a person of color are valuable contributions to any space you occupy. Find Empowering Role Models: Seek out and celebrate individuals of color who have achieved success in various fields. Their stories can serve as a source of inspiration and motivation, reinforcing the belief that success is attainable. Create Your Own Narrative: Challenge societal expectations and stereotypes by creating your own narrative. Be proud of your heritage, embrace your cultural background, and share your experiences to help shape a more inclusive society. Support and Lift Others: Encourage and uplift fellow individuals of color, recognizing their achievements and supporting their endeavors. Introduction: In the fast-paced world we live in, being a young professional comes with its own set of challenges. Striving for excellence while dealing with the weight of anxiety and the vicious cycle of procrastination can be an overwhelming experience. As a fellow young professional, I understand the struggles and stress that come along with trying to meet high standards and expectations. You often hear things like, “It’s always best to get ahead of the game” and constant reminders about all of the competition amongst your peers that you have to overcome. These things can serve as motivators, but is it for the right reasons? In this blog post, we'll delve into the rollercoaster ride of anxiety, procrastination, and productive perfectionism, and explore some strategies to navigate these challenges and achieve a healthier work-life balance. The Anxiety Trap: Anxiety, often lurking in the shadows, can take its toll on even the most ambitious individuals. It's that nagging voice inside our heads, fueling self-doubt and worry. The fear of failure, the desire to please others, and the constant need for validation can send our anxiety levels skyrocketing. The constant thoughts in your head that question, “Why can’t I just do it?” and the feeling of being so overwhelmed that it’s paralyzing hardly makes for a condition where you can work as your best self. It's no wonder that anxiety and productivity often have a complicated relationship. Procrastination: The False Comfort Zone: Anxiety and procrastination often go hand in hand. When overwhelmed by anxiety, our natural response may be to avoid the tasks that trigger those feelings. We seek temporary relief by delaying important assignments or projects. Procrastination may seem like a soothing escape from anxiety, but in reality, it only perpetuates the cycle and amplifies stress. The Perils of Productive Perfectionism: For many young professionals, the pursuit of perfection is an inherent trait. We set high standards for ourselves, aiming to excel in every aspect of our work. We may even say to ourselves, “If it can’t be done perfectly, I’d rather not do it at all”. While this drive can lead to great accomplishments, it can also be a double-edged sword. Productive perfectionists often find themselves trapped in a never-ending quest for flawlessness, constantly striving for unattainable ideals. This relentless pursuit can lead to increased anxiety and a tendency to put tasks off until the last possible moment. Strategies for Breaking Free: Embrace Self-Compassion: Recognize that perfection is an illusion and that mistakes and setbacks are a natural part of growth. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding when facing challenges or making errors. Practicing self-compassion allows you to reframe your mindset and reduce anxiety's grip on your life. Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: Overwhelm often fuels procrastination. By breaking down daunting projects into smaller, more manageable tasks, you can create a sense of progress and tackle one step at a time. Celebrate each milestone achieved, no matter how small. Set Realistic Goals and Prioritize: Establishing clear, attainable goals helps focus your efforts and reduce anxiety. Prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance, allowing you to concentrate on the most critical assignments first. Remember, not everything needs to be perfect; strive for excellence in what truly matters. Practice Mindfulness and Stress-Relief Techniques: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your routine, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises. These techniques can help calm your mind, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being. Additionally, engaging in regular physical exercise, getting enough sleep, and pursuing hobbies outside of work can help alleviate stress and recharge your mental energy. - Online Classes: 2 Tips to Succeed Outside of the Classroom
It’s no secret to anyone that online classes became the new normal in the midst of the global pandemic. In an effort to keep people safe and healthy everyone became a student of Zoom University having no other choice but to learn through a computer screen. Even now, since restrictions have been lifted, online classes are still prevalent on our college campuses. I don’t know about the rest of you but online classes were challenging for me at first. The temptation to disengage and not be present and accounted for was strong. Eventually I learned a couple things that were key to my success. Hold Yourself Accountable Online classes have the potential to allow you many freedoms with your time and schedule. If you take asynchronous online classes, I feel that far too often we don’t always have the discipline to hold ourselves accountable. Asynchronous classes are good and bad. You have the freedom to work at your own pace, there isn’t a specific class time and as long as your work gets done on time then you’re good to go. The trouble comes when that freedom isn’t used responsibly. It’s easy for classes like these to get put on the back burner because they don’t seem as important or have that same sense of urgency that traditional courses have. Therefore, you have to hold yourself accountable and stay on top of your work. Creating a regular study schedule can help with this. Create a Schedule and Stick to it If you make time to study and complete work for an in-person class, then I recommend doing the same for an online class. In fact, I think it’s super important to make sure that you delegate time in your schedule throughout the week to make sure you complete assignments, study for tests, write papers etc. for your online class because of how easy it is to neglect it. Here’s a rule of thumb I was taught by my professors at NIU: For every 1 credit hour you are enrolled in, you are supposed to dedicate one hour of your time to study for that class every week. For example, if you are taking five three credit hour classes, that’s a total of 15 credit hours and 15 hours of studying every week. Now, most people don’t dedicate that much time to studying but this does illustrate the bigger picture: you have to make time for your education. Think about when you are most productive. Some people are most productive early in the morning, late at night or in the middle of the day. Whenever you feel that you can be the most focused and productive is when you should try to get a good chunk of school work done. Once you figure out a schedule that works for you, stick to it as best you can.
- Learning Styles Turned Study Habits: 3 Learning Styles with Study Tips to Match
Do you study? Were you taught how to study? Were you successful in high school never having to study? These are all questions to ask yourself as you are beginning college. If you were the kid in high school that never had to study and still got good grades, you may need a new strategy in college. Of course, there are those students who don’t ever have to study to do well in school no matter what (I was not one of those students). If you’re anything like me, then you had to work a little bit harder in college to get that A you’re shooting for. So many times when we hear “study tips” we think of flashcards right away. This is definitely one method of studying and it certainly is one that works for some. But to me, it makes sense to figure out how you learn the best and find study methods that go with your learning style. This week I’ll break down three different learning styles and give you study tips that work best with that way of learning. How do you learn? Visual Learners Individuals who prefer to take in their information visually (seeing it). Visual aids like maps, graphs, diagrams, charts, etc. are all things that appeal to a visual learner. Study Tips for the Visual Learner Note taking-write things down. You'll remember them better that way. A trick that I learned a long time ago: Writing something one time is the same as reading it seven times. Create flow charts with information to connect ideas Probably best if you work alone to focus better Make your study area visually appealing Study graphics and pictures found in textbooks Auditory Learners Individuals who learn better when they take in information in auditory form when it is heard or spoken. These learners learn best when information is presented to them through talking, lectures, and group discussions. Study Tips for the Auditory Learner Study in groups (Use with caution-make sure you pick a good group of fellow students that are as serious about studying as you are!) Record lectures and listen to them again later (Get the professor’s permission first) Instead of just reading to yourself, trying reading aloud Study in quiet areas if you are studying alone Kinesthetic Learners Individuals who prefer to learn by doing. They usually enjoy a hands-on experience. The best way to present new information to a kinesthetic learner is through personal experience, practice, examples, or simulations. Study Tips for Kinesthetic Learners Try explaining/teaching things to other people. This is a good way to gauge if you have a good understanding of something Flashcards Move around while you’re reading or flipping through flashcards. I literally used to pace around my dorm room reading books and doing flashcards all of the time. That may have just been my anxiety but either way, there’s no shame in it! So… Do you feel like you fall into any of these categories? Are you a combination of all of these types of learning? Have you tried any of these tips? Did it work? I can tell you that I am a combination of all three of these and have used tips from all three categories. Some of you may be combo students and that’s okay! The key is to find the strategies that work for you. This won’t always happen overnight either. It may take for you to try different things until you find the method (s) that work for you. Finally, I feel that the following tips are universal for everyone on their study journey: Get organized Plan ahead Set goals and deadlines for yourself Hold yourself accountable. Accountability buddies can help too Get rid of distractions. Put your phone on “Do not Disturb” if that’s what it takes Take breaks during your study sessions Pomodoro technique: work for 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break Set boundaries for those around you.
